HE Interiors attends the Dentistry Show with Bluestone Finance

Attending the British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show at the NEC Birmingham once again proved why it remains one of the most important events in the UK dental calendar. Bringing together more than 10,000 dental professionals, practice owners, suppliers and industry experts, the event created the perfect environment for meaningful conversations about the future of dental practice design and development across the UK.

For the team at HE Interiors, this year’s show was less about simply showcasing services and more about listening to the evolving needs of modern dental practices. Across the two-day event at the NEC, we spoke with practice managers, principal dentists and business owners who are all facing a similar challenge — how to futureproof their practices while continuing to deliver exceptional patient experiences.

One of the strongest themes throughout the exhibition was refurbishment and modernisation of existing dental practices. Many owners explained that their surgeries have served them well for years, but changing patient expectations, advances in technology and operational pressures now require a fresh approach to layout, workflow and interior design. From upgrading reception areas to reconfiguring surgeries for improved efficiency, practices are increasingly recognising the importance of creating spaces that feel modern, welcoming and clinically efficient at the same time.

We had several productive discussions around phased refurbishments, allowing practices to remain operational while improvements are completed in carefully managed stages. This approach continues to be particularly attractive for busy clinics that cannot afford lengthy downtime. There was also significant interest in maximising underutilised space within existing premises, whether through surgery extensions, decontamination upgrades or the introduction of additional treatment rooms to support practice growth.

Another major talking point was the continued rise in squat dental practices across the UK. It is clear that many ambitious clinicians are now looking beyond acquiring existing businesses and are instead choosing to develop completely new practices tailored to their vision from day one. These conversations highlighted the importance of strategic planning, efficient space utilisation and creating a strong brand identity from the outset.

At HE Interiors, we understand that launching a squat practice involves far more than just interior design. It requires a complete understanding of compliance, patient flow, equipment integration and long-term scalability. Many visitors to our stand were keen to discuss how early collaboration during the planning stages can streamline the entire process and avoid costly delays later in the project. Whether converting retail units, redeveloping commercial properties or fitting out brand-new healthcare premises, the appetite for new practice creation remains strong despite wider economic pressures.

A particularly valuable aspect of this year’s exhibition was exhibiting alongside Penny from Bluestone Finance. Having financial expertise available on the stand allowed visitors to have open conversations not only about design and fit out possibilities, but also about how those ambitions can realistically be funded. For many practice owners, understanding finance options is a critical part of progressing refurbishment, extension or squat practice projects with confidence.

By working collaboratively, HE Interiors and Bluestone Finance were able to provide a more complete picture for attendees — combining practical insight into surgery design and construction with tailored financial solutions to support investment decisions. This joined-up approach was particularly well received by dentists exploring large-scale upgrades or first-time practice ownership.

The Dentistry Show continues to demonstrate how dynamic and forward-thinking the dental sector remains. Beyond the technology, products and lectures, the real value comes from the conversations taking place between professionals who are all focused on improving patient care and strengthening the future of dentistry in the UK.

For HE Interiors, the event reinforced the growing demand for expertly designed dental environments that combine compliance, functionality and exceptional aesthetics. We left Birmingham inspired by the ambition and enthusiasm of the practices we met and look forward to supporting many of these projects as they progress from concept to completion in the months ahead.
