HE Interiors worked with Oander on behalf of NHS Property Services to convert a former Orthotics Laboratory into a new Urgent Treatment Centre at Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital (QVHM), Herne Bay, Kent. This refurbishment took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, with tight schedule constraints, to provide extra clinical space for the community. The project delivered multiple treatment rooms, staff facilities, and public areas, meeting rigorous health, safety, and functional requirements, while managing budget and time pressure.

Project Highlights

  • Transformation: Converted the former Orthotics Laboratory into a purpose-built Urgent Treatment Centre.
  • Urgency & Timing: Project was initiated and executed during UK lockdown; delivered quickly under COVID-19 restrictions.
  • Compliance: Operations carried out observing social distancing, following Construction Leadership Council (CLC) COVID-19 guidelines, protecting workers.
  • New Facilities Provided:
    • Five new clinical treatment rooms/spaces
    • Staff break-out / rest area
    • Clean and dirty utility rooms
    • Office space
    • Reception and waiting area for patient flow
  • Stakeholder Praise: The NHS client highlighted HE Interiors’ professionalism, effective communication, and clear understanding of the desired finish, despite rigid budget and compressed timeframe.
  • Community & Sector Impact: The centre will serve the wider community in Herne Bay, contributing additional urgent care capacity in a critical time.
  • Social Good: Seen as “protecting the NHS” in a crisis; strong community support during lockdown, including help from local stakeholders and The Salvation Army.
