St Luke’s Hospice – New Distribution Centre & Superstore

DB+

New Distribution Centre & Superstore, Harrow & Brent

St Luke’s Hospice, a long-standing client with 16 charity shops across Harrow and Brent, commissioned HE Interiors to design and build a combined distribution centre and superstore at Waverley. The brief was ambitious: to create a facility that would not only improve operational efficiency for St Luke’s growing network of shops but also offer a high-quality retail experience for the public. This dual-purpose project required careful planning to integrate functionality, staff workflow, and visitor experience in a single, purpose-built space.

Starting from a blank shell, HE Interiors took a holistic approach to the project, delivering a facility that seamlessly combines operational efficiency with a welcoming, accessible retail environment. The new superstore provides an inviting space where members of the public can browse a wide range of donated items, including clothing, furniture, accessories, and vintage goods. A dedicated drop-off area was also incorporated, allowing donations to be received conveniently while ensuring smooth circulation for staff and visitors alike.

Behind the scenes, the distribution centre has been designed to optimise the flow of goods across St Luke’s charity network. HE Interiors delivered fully fitted offices, meeting rooms, and dedicated spaces for eBay photography, enabling the hospice to efficiently manage online sales alongside in-store operations. Future-focused features, such as EV charging points, were included to support the hospice’s move toward sustainable operations and electric vehicle use. Essential building services, including data infrastructure, air conditioning, and other utilities, were integrated to support both retail and back-of-house functions.

The design goes beyond pure functionality; it reflects the values and ethos of St Luke’s Hospice. From the carefully considered layout to the choice of finishes and furnishings, every element was designed to convey dignity, care, and quality, mirroring the compassion and professionalism for which St Luke’s is known in the community. HE Interiors worked closely with the hospice team throughout the project to ensure the new facility met both operational requirements and the expectations of staff, volunteers, and visitors.

The Waverley project demonstrates HE Interiors’ ability to deliver complex, multi-functional fit-outs that blend practicality with thoughtful design. By creating a facility that supports efficient operations while providing a welcoming, high-quality retail space, HE Interiors has enabled St Luke’s Hospice to better serve its community, streamline its charity operations, and enhance the overall experience for visitors and donors.

This successful project reinforces HE Interiors’ reputation as a trusted partner for charitable organisations, combining technical expertise with sensitivity to mission-driven objectives. The Waverley superstore and distribution centre stands as a model of innovation, efficiency, and thoughtful design in the charitable retail sector.
